Introduction to Nursing
If you are considering coming to the UK to work as a nurse, it is necessary for you to complete the Overseas Nursing Programme, which allows you to register to work in the NHS or private sector health services.
International students normally undertake the ONP as part of a university International Nursing degree which also provides the opportunity to register with the UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). During such a 1 year full time course, which can be at undergraduate or postgraduate level, International students will have the option to embark on the ONP. This involves a 400 hour supervised practice placement.
Careers in Nursing
During your studies in Nursing you will specialise in one of the following areas:

- Learning disability
You will need to choose carefully as this will influence your future career options in the initial stages, but you will have the opportunity to branch out to other areas of nursing in the future.
Nursing Entry Requirements
Being able to communicate well with patients and colleagues is an essential attribute for being a good nurse. Thus, you will need to provide proof of your English language abilities. You will also need to be capable of academic study at a university level, be numerate and have the right kind of personality to work under pressure.
- Typical International Baccalaureate requirements: 30 points.
- Typical A-levels requirements: ABB.
- Typical IELTS requirements: 7.0 overall, with no lower than 6.0 in any one component.
